Parvovirus Outbreak in Surrey

9th May 2011

Parvovirus is a disease which causes profuse, bloody diarrhoea and vomiting. Parvo, as we often call it, was the scourge of the dog population in the late 1980’s when large numbers of infected animals died. This continued until a successful vaccination became available. Vaccinations are invaluable in protecting pets against many dreadful diseases, many of which can be fatal like parvo. Very sadly, after an absence of five years, three cases of Parvo have just been confirmed this week by colleagues in nearby Epsom.

We are very concerned because this disease is often fatal, especially in puppies and older dogs. The recession has also impacted on the number of dogs being vaccinated, and as a result more and more pets are now vulnerable. The fear is that with vaccination levels falling there could be a more widespread outbreak throughout the region.

Dogs are exposed to the virus by social contact with other dogs and also faeces. With more and more social interaction between dogs – out on walks, in parks and at shows - it is in these situations that the virus can be spread more widely.

We really do urge all pet owners to ensure that their pets’ vaccinations are up-to-date. Prompt action now will prevent unnecessary suffering and loss. May is National Vaccination Month, meaning we can re-start a pet’s full course of vaccinations for the price of a simple booster.
