Vaccinations
Vaccination has played a vital role in reducing the incidence and severity of many potentially fatal diseases in all species of animals. These diseases, however, are still present in the dog, cat, rabbit and ferret populations, which reinforces the importance to vaccinate. In recent years there have been many advances in vaccination protocols allowing us to individually tailor your pet’s vaccination requirements and prevent over-vaccination.
Our routine dog vaccination includes the following viruses
- Distemper Virus
- Parvovirus
- Parainfluenza Virus
- Leptospirosis canicola
- Leptospirosis icterohaemorrhagiae
- Adenovirus Type 2
- Coronavirus.
We can start your puppy’s vaccination course from as early as 6 weeks of age with a second vaccine at 10 weeks or 3-4 weeks later. Do remember that even though your puppy will have a degree of protection from the first vaccination this is not enough to allow exercise outside your own house and garden until a week after the second vaccination.
Annual vaccination is recommended to maintain immunity.
We would also highly recommend vaccination against Bordetella Bronchiseptica (kennel cough) which is very prevalent in this area and is spread through direct contact. This vaccine needs to be given 2 weeks apart from the main vaccinations. The vaccine is given into one of the nostrils and must be repeated on an annual basis.
