A microchip is a small silicon chip, approx 12mm long, which carries a unique 15-digit number and is read with a microchip scanner. On a central database this unique number will store your details and those of your pet which can never be lost unlike a collar and tag.

The microchip we are now using is called a “Bio-thermo” chip which when scanned will also read your pets temperature removing the need for more conventional methods.

To insert the microchip, a needle (a little larger than a vaccination needle) is inserted under the skin of your pet just like when it has an injection.

Your pet can be microchipped at any time in a routine consultation, although we recommend it is either done at the second vaccination or at the time of neutering (castration or spaying), whilst under anaesthetic.

Your pet must be microchipped in order to qualify for the pet travel scheme (pet passport).

Always remember to keep your contact details up to date with us and with the microchip database so we can contact you if your pet is found.
